WebP to PNG Converter

Drop your .webp files below to convert them to PNG right in your browser. Currently free, no credits used. Files are not uploaded. PNG is lossless and supports full alpha transparency, so transparent backgrounds are kept. Convert up to 50 files at once and download them one by one or as a ZIP. Animated WebP: converted to animated PNG (APNG) with all frames, per-frame delays, and loop count kept (falls back to saving the first frame if your browser does not support animation decoding). Renaming .webp to .png does not convert the file.

Your images never leave your browser: decoding and PNG encoding happen on your device. Currently free, no credits used.

Is your WebP a screenshot of a table or text?

Skip the PNG step: Image to Excel and Image to Text accept WebP and pull the data out directly.

How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. 1

    Add your WebP files

Choose or drag your .webp files onto the converter. Several at once is fine, up to 50 per batch.

  2. 2

    Your browser converts them

Each image is decoded and re-encoded as PNG on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

  3. 3

    Download PNG or ZIP

Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP file.

Conversion uses your browser's own canvas PNG export, which browsers are required to support (MDN: toBlob). It is currently free with no credits used, no account needed, and no usage limit beyond the batch size.

WebP vs PNG

Both formats keep transparency. WebP is built for small files on websites; PNG is the format almost every app, editor and upload form accepts.

Why your browser saves images as WebP

Many websites and CDNs send WebP to any browser whose HTTP Accept header says it supports image/webp, because the files are smaller (Google WebP FAQ). "Save image as" keeps the format the server actually sent, so you end up with a .webp file even when the page looked like it showed a JPG or PNG.

Google's own FAQ suggests converting WebP to a common lossless format such as PNG when an app cannot open it. That is exactly what this page does.

Other ways to convert WebP to PNG

If you prefer built-in tools, these are the official routes. They usually work one file at a time.

  • Mac (Preview): Open the file in Preview, choose File > Export, pick PNG in the Format menu and click Save. To convert several images, open them in one window, select them in the sidebar, then export (Apple Support). Preview opens WebP on macOS Big Sur or later.

  • Mac (Finder): Select the files, then use More > Convert Image and choose a format (Apple Support).

  • Windows: Open the WebP in Paint and choose File > Save as > PNG picture. Paint converts one image at a time; for many files, use the batch converter above.

  • Command line: Google's dwebp tool decodes WebP to PNG by default. It does not support animated WebP (dwebp docs).

    dwebp input.webp -o output.png
  • Phone: Open this page in your phone's browser and convert there. Files stay on your phone.

Animated WebP to PNG

WebP supports animation (Google WebP), and PNG can hold animation too as APNG, which is part of the PNG Third Edition spec (W3C). Apps that do not understand APNG simply show one still frame.

What this converter does: animated WebP files are converted to animated PNG (APNG), preserving all frames, per-frame delays, and loop counts. If your browser does not support decoding animation frames (such as older Safari or Firefox), it falls back to saving the first frame as a still PNG. Google's dwebp does not support animated WebP at all.

Got a screenshot of a table or text in WebP?

Converting is often just a step toward getting the content out. If your WebP is a screenshot of a spreadsheet, invoice or price list, extract the table into Excel directly, or turn a screenshot into a spreadsheet. Both accept WebP, so you do not need to convert first.

For paragraphs, labels or code, copy the text from the image or run OCR on the image. Already converted to PNG? Use PNG to Excel. There is also a step-by-step guide on how to extract text from a screenshot.

WebP to PNG FAQ

How do I convert WebP to PNG for free?

Drop your .webp files into the converter on this page and download the PNGs. It is currently free with no credits used, and conversion runs entirely in your browser with no upload and no signup.

Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?

No further quality is lost, because PNG is a lossless format. But if the WebP was saved in lossy mode, the detail it already discarded cannot be restored.

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses better than PNG. Google reports lossless WebP files are about 26% smaller than PNGs. A lossy WebP photo saved as lossless PNG usually grows even more.

Will my transparent background be kept?

Yes. Both WebP and PNG support an alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent. Converting to JPG instead would fill them with a solid color, because JPEG has no alpha channel.

What happens to animated WebP files?

Animated WebP files are converted into animated PNG (APNG) with all frames, timing, and loop count kept. In browsers that cannot decode animation frames, the converter falls back to saving the first frame as a still PNG.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser decodes the WebP and writes the PNG on your own device.

Can I convert many WebP files at once?

Yes. Add up to 50 files per batch (50 MB each) and download them individually or together as a ZIP.

Can I just rename .webp to .png?

No. Renaming changes only the file name; the data inside is still WebP, and many apps will still fail to open it. The image has to be re-encoded as PNG.

Why does my browser save images as WebP?

Many websites and CDNs send WebP to browsers that say they accept it (via the HTTP Accept header), because the files are smaller. 'Save image as' keeps the format the server actually sent.

How do I convert WebP to PNG on a Mac without an app?

Open the file in Preview, choose File > Export, pick PNG in the Format menu and click Save. In Finder you can also use the Convert Image quick action for several files.

How do I convert WebP to PNG on Windows?

Open the WebP in Paint and choose File > Save as > PNG picture. Paint converts one image at a time; for many files, use this page's batch converter.

My WebP is a screenshot of a table or text. Can I get the data out?

Yes. Instead of converting, upload it to Image to Excel to get an editable spreadsheet, or Image to Text to copy the text. Both accept WebP.
